Project ZIP Code

One of the most powerful tools credit unions possess is our active grassroots membership, but identifying this membership is key in overcoming political and legislative challenges. Project ZIP Code is a privacy secure, user friendly resource for leagues and credit unions that matches credit union members to their federal and state districts by using ZIP code information only. This information provides CUNA and leagues with summary report membership strength by state and federal legislative districts, and allows credit unions to determine how many members live in specific geographic areas.

In addition, the information gathered from running Project ZIP Code provides credit unions with another marketing tool to continue their high level of service to members. Project ZIP Code allows credit unions to match their membership to federal and state districts so the credit union can determine how many members live in specific geographic areas, and the credit union can use this valuable information for internal marketing purposes such as examining the feasibility of shared branching, determining the best locations for branch expansion, and ATM services based on the geographic concentration of membership.

Not planning any shared branching, ATM expansion, or other marketing initiatives in the near future? Not a problem, as Project ZIP Code has other uses which are critical to the health and long term strength of the credit union movement. Project ZIP Code matches credit union membership files with federal and state district information allowing one to identify how many of the credit union members live in each respective district. This information is extremely valuable when meeting with members of Congress or state lawmakers, as many lawmakers do not know how many credit union members live in their district. Participating regularly in Project ZIP Code and sharing this information with elected officials is an important part of being a strong credit union advocate, and identifying precisely how many members of credit unions are in each district is key to our grassroots strength!
