Coosa Valley Credit Union was once again the proud title sponsor of the 2010 Clock Tower Classic Handcycling Race held April 30th through May 2nd. This was an international race and The Greater Rome Convention and Visitor's bureau, with help from Coosa Valley Credit Union, Harbin Clinic, U.S. Handcycling, and UCI, rolled out the red carpet for three days of racing that included a 30 minute time trial road race, lap race and hill climb. All three races delivered challenging courses to an elite field of 32 athletes, who thrilled the local community with world class racing. Officials said that this weekend’s Clocktower Classic handcycling series was a huge success and that the races in Rome are quickly becoming a popular destination for handcyclists from around the world. According to Ann Hortman of the Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau, the participants in this weekend’s races said the Rome community provides a welcoming atmosphere for them every year. “This weekend was just great — things went fantastically, and the cyclists really appreciated all the support they got. They said they were just blown away by the hospitality that everyone extended to them,” Hortman said. Robert Smyth, Marketing manager for the Credit Union stated “When the opportunity was offered for the third year for the Credit Union to be a part of such a prestigious event, we were honored. The men and women who take part in these races are not only incredible athletes but inspirations to the fact that nothing has to hold you back from participating in any arena of life you choose. I enjoy watching the race as well has assisting with the announcing. I learn more and more about this sport every year.” The race also included a tri-cycle race for charity. Captain Jack Dollar of the Coosa Valley Credit Union Savings Crew raced for the Family Resource Center but was beaten out by Chris Carey who won the “Playtona 500”.Carey’s win earned $160 for Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build.
