Chatsworth, GA – Georgia Federal Credit Union (GFCU) is proud to announce the winners for their 2010 scholarship program. A total of $10,000 will be awarded to eleven students through the GFCU Vernon E. Carne Scholarship Fund, created in honor of the Credit Union’s founder.
This is the 16th year GFCU has given the Vernon E. Carne Scholarship awards. Selection was based on academic accomplishments, leadership and participation in both school and community activities and an essay on how the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people’ helps communities. This year’s essay competition drew entries from 43 different high schools and the top winner was Shelley Anne Evans of Fayetteville, who received $3,000.
The second place award of $2,000 went to Carley McCall Smith of Chatsworth. She attends Murray County High School and plans to attend the University of Georgia and major in Biology/Pre-Med. Carley is a member of the National Honor Society, Vice President of the Beta Club, Editor of her high school yearbook, Student Council representative, a UGA Merit Scholar, and Captain of the Varsity Cheerleading Squad. An active volunteer, Carley also teaches classes at Northwest Ga. Gymnastics. Carley is the daughter of Stephen and Leigh Anne Smith of Chatsworth.
